Reading Passage

South Korean President Lee Jae Myung announced a new diplomatic plan called the “SHINE” initiative during his speech at Cairo University in Egypt. 

The initiative is designed to expand Korea’s cooperation with countries in the Middle East. According to the president, 

SHINE stands for Stability, Harmony, Innovation, Network, and Education, which represent the main goals of the program.

President Lee emphasized that Korea aims to contribute to peace and stability in the Middle East as well as on the Korean Peninsula. 

He explained that his administration is working to reopen dialogue with North Korea and reduce tensions in the region. 

Lee also noted that Egypt showed strong support for his peace efforts.

Another major focus of the SHINE initiative is innovation. Korea plans to expand cooperation in new industries such as artificial intelligence, hydrogen technology, and other advanced fields. 

Lee also stated that Korea will continue strengthening economic relations by seeking a Comprehensive Economic Partnership Agreement with Egypt. 

He reminded the audience that Korea’s economic growth—often called the “Miracle of the Han River”—was made possible with support from Middle Eastern countries, especially through energy and construction projects.

The initiative also highlights the importance of cultural and educational exchange.

President Lee promised more programs for Middle Eastern students to study in Korea and for professionals to receive training. 

He also suggested cultural partnerships, including cooperation between the Grand Egyptian Museum and the National Museum of Korea.

Lee concluded by saying that the SHINE initiative reflects Korea’s effort to practice pragmatic diplomacy in a rapidly changing global environment.
